This Week's Update

  • Dear Friends,

This Shabbat - 16 Sivan, 5784 • June 22, 2024 we read the portion of Behaalotecha in the Book of Bamidbar. The portion begins with the Mitzvah of lighting the Menorah. This Mitzvah was given to Aharon the High Priest and to his descendants the Kohanim for all generations to come. The Ramban writes, that this Mitzvah alludes to the miracle of the Chanukah Menorah as well, which is an eternal Mitzvah and the original miracle was facilitated through the Kohanim in the Second Temple era.

This Shabbat, after service we will be sharing a delicious Kiddush together, in honor of Francine Cantin Friedman's 93rd birthday, which is celebrated on the 20th of June.  Fran is the mother of Bruce Cantin and Sharyn Sharer.  Bruce is sponsoring this week's Kiddush. With best wishes for a Happy Birthday.

The Torah portion this week begins with the command to Aharon, that when he lights the candles in the Menorah at the Holy Temple, the flames of the candles should glow upwards. The human soul is the candle of G-d. Our task is that ours souls should glow upwards. This means that we should ensure that the spark in our souls should grow into a glowing flame. This will result in our lives being illuminated with the light of Torah and that this light will shine outward, which will brighten the world around us as well.

    Shabbat Shalom
