• Dear Friends,

This Shabbat - 12 Nissan, 5784 • April 20, 2024 we read the portion of Metzora which describes the purification rituals of the Jewish people. Some Sages refer to this portion as Parshat Tahara - The portion of Purification.

This Shabbat is also known as Shabbat Hagadol, the great big Shabbat, as it is the Shabbat before the Passover holiday. In the year of the original Exodus, a great miracle happened on this Shabbat while the Israelites were still in Egypt. The Egyptian firstborn, who knew of the impending plague that was to afflict them, protested and demanded that the Israelites should be set free. This was seen as the beginning of the great miracle of their liberation which culminated on the first day of Passover. We read a portion of the Passover Haggadah on this Shabbat to mark this special miracle.

This Shabbat we will be celebrating the Bar Mitzvah of Leo Taylor, at Ohr HaTorah. Leo will read from the Torah and deliver a Dvar Torah. A grand Kiddush celebration will follow the Morning service. The Kiddush is being sponsored by Leo's parents, Mike and Andie Taylor. All members and friends of Ohr HaTorah are welcome to join this festive event. Mazel to to the Taylors and the Cohens on this very special milestone.
